Inherent Stages of GriefThe grieving process may involve a variety of stages. Depending on the degree of loss endured, an individual may experience shock, denial, bargaining, anger, or guilt. All forms of loss can be exposed to these stages. In the event of losing a loved one through death or personally experiencing near death, stages may be described as follows: Shock – An unexpected experience of death that jars the mind or emotions or a reality of death setting in. Anger – A strong emotion of displeasure or hostility oriented toward the grievance of loss. Guilt – Remorse caused by feeling responsible in some way for the death of your loved one or self-reproach for supposed inadequacy or wrongdoing.

Emotional Healing after LossThe most important gift you can give your body for a return to peace is to become increasingly aware of your thoughts and feelings, allowing them to be expressed in a supportive, nurturing environment. The first step to healing grief is to be aware of it, to allow and accept it. You can do this by encouraging grief to speak to you. If your grief could talk, what would it say? By embracing grief, you give permission for all possible feelings to arise. Although this may feel painful, acceptance of your emotions allows the complete grieving process to unfold so that in time you may return to a peaceful state-of-being. Did you know… Every thought not expressed Feelings repressed, or not expressed, may result in the body as physical, mental or emotional illness. What you resist will persist. When not acknowledged, expression and creativity lacks a vehicle of direction, becoming trapped in the body. This entrapment is potential for the development of a variety of health related concerns. There is no time frame for healing grief. Everyone heals at a different rate and in a highly individualized way. Be patient with yourself. We cannot emphasize enough. Be patient with yourself…and reach out! It is important to stay connected with individuals in your life you love and trust. You may feel like hiding out or running, a common reaction. It is essential, however, to trust your inner guidance for self-care and continue to talk about your loved one. You may resist because it brings up uncomfortable emotions; however, self-expression is one of the most direct paths to healing the heart. By allowing yourself to feel and express emotions that arise, as a result of your present condition, you will assist the healing process much sooner.
